Collating at Smith-Edwards-Dunlap (SED),
Philadelphia’s leading commercial printing company, is performed
in a variety of fashions. Finished multi-page books are typically sorted
on our Sulby Collator. Single leaves and four-pagers can be set up
on our Gatherall 20-pocket collator. Collating and inserting for mailing
is achieved on two available devices. And while we try to eliminate
labor-intensive handwork with automated collating capabilities, our
bindery employees will methodically and accurately assemble those projects
that don’t lend themselves to automation. Once in proper order,
commercial printing products are ready for binding and other finishing
services.
Smith-Edwards-Dunlap
has developed efficient systems over the years for assembling complex,
multi-component packages. These projects often require error-free sequencing
of booklets which are then barcoded, married with other components,
packaged, and labeled. The booklets will gather on the Sulby collator
prior to barcoding and wrapping. By combining automated techniques
with manual, we have consistently delivered product of this nature
with zero defects.
Many of our clients award
us projects that may include both a pocket folder and a series of inserts
that go within. Typically we will collate the inserts automatically
on the Gatherall collator and then insert the group by hand.
